Terrell girls shine in Monday soccer scrimmage

Published: Tuesday, January 4, 2005 11:46 AM CST
Early morning rain and gusty winds may have delayed play but they weren't enough to cancel Monday's three-team scrimmage between the Terrell, Kaufman and Richardson girls soccer teams at Memorial Stadium.

In the opening match, the Lady Tigers used a stifling defense and timely scoring to easily dispatch former district rival Richardson, 4-0.

Roxana Ramirez scored on a high shot from 40 yards out that bounced over the goalie's head for a 1-0 lead. The second half was all Terrell, according to coach John Lantrip, with the front line of Meagan Whitling, Arianne Roman, Gennifer Hurst and Stefani Pinckard putting constant pressure on the Richardson defense.

Hurst, who needs just four regular-season goals to reach 100 for her career, scored early in the second half for a 2-0 and advantage and again five minutes later to put the Lady Tigers up 3-0. Whitling completed the scoring off a feed from Arianne Roman. Midfielders Tamra Renfro and Quita Martin each recorded assists.

The Terrell defense limited Richardson to just two shots on goal, helping goalies Virginia Potscinski and Devon Skinner combine for the shutout.

In the second scrimmage, the Lady Tiger varsity built a 5-0 first-half lead before turning things over to the junior varsity. Kaufman mounted a strong rally playing against the JV in the second half but Terrell hung on for a 5-4 win.

"It was a great team effort," Lantrip said. "This was a nice way to start the season, playing 60 minutes of soccer and outscoring your opponents, 9-0. If we can play like this for an entire match and string together several of these, we

will be fine as we go through the season."

The varsity and JV teams scrimmage at Mount Pleasant on Friday and the varsity plays Athens in the first round of the East Texas Shootout at Palestine on Jan. 14. The Lady Tigers will enter the tournament as defending champions.
