Tigerette drill team dramas play out in front of TISD trustees
By Jo Anna Matejka
After a year of problems within the Terrell High School Tigerette organization, TISD trustees moved to set a deadline for resolution and directed administrators to assign a mentor to team director JoNeita Moore.
The board's motion, read by Ben Carmona after lengthy closed session Monday night states, “additional corrective action is required to resolve this Level III grievance and to direct the administration to continue to monitor, work with and provide guidance to the sponsor with specific directives to ensure that the allegations and issues that have arisen in the 2005-2006 school year concerning the drill team do not arise in the upcoming school year. The administration is to provide a detailed directive to Mrs. Moore and meet with Mrs. Moore to discuss and obtain her agreement to comply with this directive no later than July 15, 2006.”
Among issues brought by a half-dozen Tigerette families, many involve favoritism and harassment that forced the holding of second tryouts for officer positions in the fall and have culminated in threats levied by three officers to another officer on the Web site www.myspace.com, which resulted in peace bonds being issued against some girls in Judge James Williams' Justice of the Peace court.
“The Board directs the administration to investigate the issues relating to the use of Web site and Web postings by drill team members to ensure that any statements or conduct that could reasonably be perceived as threatening, harassing or inappropriate stop immediately and any such statements or conduct are dealt with in a timely and appropriate manner and that disciplinary sanctions are imposed in accordance with the Tigerettes Constitution and district policy,” Carmona said. “The Board expects the administration, sponsor and drill team members to follow and comply with the March 2006 Tigerettes Constitution. The Board will not tolerate any harassment or favoritism among the drill team or by the sponsor and directs the administration to work with the sponsor to ensure that this type of conduct does not occur in the future.”
