Kaufman cowboy Stevenson returns for Texas Stampede
By Bryan Ray
Kaufman's Wes Stevenson will return to Dallas this weekend to compete in bareback riding at the Wrangler Pro Rodeo Tour Championship hosted by the Texas Stampede, which starts Friday and runs through Sunday.
Stevenson earned a spot in the event by finishing as one of the top competitors in rodeos throughout the country.
He enters Friday's rodeo third in the Professional Cowboy World Standings and has qualified for the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, the top rodeo event in the world.
Stevenson will look to win the Crystal Cup, the prize awarded during the Stampede event, and a chunk of the $470,000 in prize money that will be awarded.
He has made the final round of the Stampede the last two years but has never won the championship round.
With a good showing this weekend, Stevenson can also put himself in contention to win his first world championship.
Former Terrell cowboy Matt Austin, who later graduated from Wills Point, also qualified for the Stampede but will not be able to compete because of injury. Austin, the reigning World Champion bull rider, is currently leading the Professional Cowboys World Standings in his event.
