Tigers head to tourney before district resumes
By Cliff Gibson: sports@terrelltribune.com
The Terrell Tigers have had more than a week to think about what went wrong last Tuesday in a 60-53 loss to Highland Park.
They'll have a couple of opportunities to correct those problems before District 10-4A play resumes as the 5-8 Tigers head to Sherman on Thursday for the Sherman Holiday Invitational.
Terrell trailed by just four points at halftime in the district opener against the Scots and trimmed that deficit to two after holding Highland Park to eight points in the third period.
However, the Scots regained their hot shooting hand and outscored Terrell, 21-15, over the final eight minutes to earn the win.
The Tigers will return to district play Tuesday against Greenville but before that happens, Terrell will play three games at Sherman.
By winning the tournament title, Terrell could even its season record and gain some much-needed confidence before it heads into a brutal district schedule.
The Tigers will play their first game Thursday against McKinney Boyd at noon. The game will be at Hughey Gymnasium on the campus of Austin College.
The tournament is divided among three gyms and also includes the courts at Piner Middle School and Sherman High School.
The 9-5 Broncos are in their first year of varsity competition and started fast, winning their first four games against mediocre competition.
McKinney Boyd has split its last 10 games against some fairly tough teams while most its wins have come against schools in lower classifications.
Other games in the first round include Sherman against Alvarado, Paris against St. Marks and Rowlett against Highland Park. Terrell would face the Sherman/Alvarado winner if it gets past the Broncos on Thursday.
The tournament is split into two divisions, with Class 5A and 4A teams making up Division I, and Class 3A and 2A teams making up Division II. Each division will have a champion.
