Kaufman senior center struck by vandalism

KAUFMAN - Police in Kaufman are looking for a vandal or vandals who struck the Kaufman Senior Citizen Center sometime during the morning of May 30. The center is located at 112 S. Jackson.
The suspect or suspects broke in through a door on the south side of the building on West Cherry Street by hauling a large piece of concrete through the glass, which Tammara Scott, the center's director, believes was done more than once.
“I don't know where they got the rock from but apparently the first time they threw it, it hit the metal bar you push to open the door and it dented that and left rock debris on it,” Scott said. “Then I guess they threw it again and it went inside.”
Scott said the glass from the door crumbled, leaving a mess for staff to clean up.
“I guess when the rock hit inside, it just exploded,” Scott said. “There was glass in the bathrooms, on the tables and all down the hallways. It was just a mess to clean up.”
Though multiple desk drawers and closets were rummaged through, it appears as though nothing was stolen.
“They opened every drawer and every closet and rumbled through it but as far as we can tell, visibly, there's nothing gone,” Scott said. “The best we can tell is they were looking for money and there is no money here.”
The city of Kaufman will replace the door.
