Regional administrators encourage school traffic safety

The Region 10 Education Service Center on Wednesday issued a press release urging Texas school districts and parents to take a proactive role in keeping students safe this fall.

Many schools throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth area, including Terrell ISD, will begin classes Aug. 27 and Region 10 administrators are asking parents and school officials to remain mindful that everyone plays a role in keeping students safe throughout the year.

According to the release, the safety and welfare of students should be a school district's first priority. Help and support of parents, other family members, the students themselves, and the community is vital.

The center is asking parents to pay closer attention to the needs of older students particularly those who drive themselves or ride to school with a friend.

Administrators say all drivers should expect an increase in traffic in their local area as school districts around the state reconvene this fall. Heavily trafficked areas include school zones during the first weeks of school and during morning arrival and afternoon departure times.

Drivers are urged to be especially careful in these areas because students, particularly younger ones, will sometimes forget what they have been taught and may dash into the roadway.

Parents are encouraged to review safety procedures such as how to cross street at a corner or crosswalk with their, children before they attend the first day of school.

National studies confirm that pedestrian injuries are the second-leading cause of unintentional injury or death among children 5-14.
