Terrell High School students scored 68 points lower than the state average overall on SAT scores released by The College Board earlier this month.

According to The College Board exam results for the 2006-2007 school year, students in Terrell had an average math score of 479, 469 in reading and 465 in writing. A perfect score for each section is 800.

The SAT, which is owned by The College Board, a nonprofit membership organization, was taken by 78 Terrell high school students.

In comparison to last year's SAT scores, Terrell High students increased their writing scores by four points. Student averages dropped eight points in math and seven points in reading.

“College readiness for our students is of utmost importance to the staff of Terrell High School,” said Shannon Clevenger, THS secondary counselor, in an e-mail. “We have instituted several programs to increase student readiness.”

Annually, all sophomores take the Pre-SAT exam. In taking this, students receive access to The College Board's online program, “My College QuickStart.” The program is a personalized college and career planning kit.

All students at THS are also involved in an advisory program this year that offers tools for careers, college planning, goal setting, test preparation and other topics to increase student success, Clevenger said.

“The Terrell High School staff is committed to ensuring our students reach their goals and beyond,” she said.

In Kaufman County, Forney High School had 151 students take the exam where they averaged 473 in reading, 500 in math and 460 in writing. Scurry-Rosser Independent School District had 24 students who took the exam, averaging a 519 in reading, a 529 in math and 499 in writing.

No information was provided for Crandall High School at press time. Kaufman High School did not return calls.

Statewide, 132,067 high school students took the SAT for the 2006-2007 school year. On average, Texas students scored 507 in math, which is up one point from last year. Students scored 492 in reading, up one point from last year's scores and 482 in writing, which dropped five points from last year's exam.

Nationally, the average math score dropped by three points to 515, one point to 502 in reading and three points to 494 in writing skills.

The College Board attributed the decline largely to the fact that a more-diverse pool of students is taking the widely used entrance exam. More students than ever before took the test, both nationally and in Texas.

“The larger the population you get to take an examination, it obviously knocks down the scores,” said Gaston Caperton, president of the College Board.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
