Pats beat the clock, Tigers

GARLAND - A questionable foul call with a half-second on the clock Friday put Lakeview Centennial's Kenny Colbert at the line, and after the Patriots (2-1) had struggled from the charity stripe almost all night, Colbert delivered with a pair of clutch foul shots that gave Lakeview a 59-57 victory over Terrell (1-1).

J'Lil Herndon was called for a blocking foul when Colbert rose for a potential game-winning shot but Terrell coach Willie Coulter said the call was definitely debatable.

“He reached but I don't think he fouled anybody,” Coulter said. “It didn't look like he made contact. He made a reach for the ball but didn't foul.”

Coulter not only questioned the foul call but also was upset following the loss about a timeout that wasn't awarded during the crucial final minute of the contest.

“The official was running down the sideline and I yelled for a timeout but he just acted like I wasn't there,” Coulter said. “He gave their coach a timeout right afterward but I didn't get mine.”

Colbert scored a game-high 18 points and two others - Walter French (15) and Ryan Williams (14) - were in double figures for the Patriots.

The Tigers also had three players score at least 10 points, led by Herndon's 14. Bedarrious Collier scored eight of his 11 in the fourth quarter and Antwain Thomas tossed in 10 during a tough shooting night for the senior guard.

Terrell struggled mightily from the floor throughout the contest and missed several buckets inside the paint that could have put the Tigers over the top. Coulter was quick to point out how costly it can be to miss those shots.

“We had several opportunities but couldn't make them,” Coulter said. “We've got to be able to make the close shots and get points on the board.”

Poor shooting was a big reason why Terrell quickly fell behind, 7-0, as Williams dropped in a pair of easy buckets and French came off the Lakeview bench to drain a trey from the left corner. Thomas answered with a deep ball to finally put Terrell on the scoreboard.

Lakeview went ahead, 11-3, but Terrell got back to within three at 11-8 and ended the quarter trailing, 13-10.

A drive by Herndon got the Tigers to within a point at 14-13 but Lakeview was able to string together a series of baskets to take its biggest lead, 28-18, at the 3:20 mark in the second period. The Patriots led by double digits again at 32-22 before Terrell ripped off seven straight on a pair of put backs by Herndon wrapped around a trey from Sirron Fleming.

Terrell trailed at the half, 33-29.

A rejuvenated Tiger team started the second half with a suffocating defense that forced several turnovers, which led to easy layups on the other end. The Tigers scored the first 13 points of the third quarter to take a 42-33 lead. Fast break buckets by Cadarius Herndon and Thomas, plus deep balls from Tim Howard and Thomas contributed to the run.

Lakeview stormed back to trim the lead to 44-40 before Terrell closed the period with a 46-40 lead.

Terrell's aggressive defense led to a big opportunity for Lakeview as the Patriots went into a double bonus situation at the 7:05 mark of the final frame. A pair of foul shots by Colbert and three more from Ronald Dawson tied the game at 53-53 with 4:37 left.

A pair of free throws by Herndon and a mid-range jumper by Collier set up by a no-look pass from Derek Kennedy, put Terrell back in front, 57-54, but a trey by Colbert tied it at 57-57 with 1:39 left.

Terrell took possession with 30 seconds on the clock and what appeared to be an easy layup for Thomas rolled in and out before Lakeview tied up the loose ball with 12 seconds remaining. The Patriot's final possession resulted in the foul by Herndon and Colbert's winning free throws.

Terrell hosts Tyler John Tyler on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
