Cold shooting leads to Tigers' first home loss

A cold shooting performance and a physical Wylie team were too much for Terrell to overcome Tuesday, as the Tigers (3-2) suffered their first home loss of the season in a 62-47 win by the 3-2 Pirates.

Terrell shot just 8-of-29 (28 percent) from the floor in the first half, including 3-of-13 in the first quarter and Antwain Thomas scored a season-low nine points just four days after dropping 38 in a victory over John Tyler.

Thomas went scoreless in the first half as well as the final period and finished the night just 3-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-11 from beyond the arc.

Tedrick Urune led all scorers with 21 points and Cederick Clark tossed in 14 more for the Pirates, who harassed Terrell shooters all night in a physical contest. J'Lil Herndon led the Tigers with 11 points but after Thomas's nine, no other Terrell player had more than four.

Terrell had a tough time finding the bottom of the net, falling behind, 6-1, while missing its first five shot attempts before finally getting one to fall at the 3:20 mark.

With Wylie leading, 8-3, Herndon put in a layup off the break and pulled down a Thomas miss and put it back to make it 8-7 after one period.

Another putback by Derek Kennedy gave Terrell its first lead in the opening minute of the second period, leading to a back and forth quarter that saw eight lead changes.

Wylie took its biggest lead of the period at five points when Urune nailed a trey from the corner at the 1:15 mark. Herndon answered with a fadeaway jumper but Thadd Varmall put in two points just before the buzzer to give the Pirates a 25-20 lead at the break.

Urune made a pair of free throws to make it 27-20, which led to Terrell's biggest charge of the night, a 10-1 run that gave Terrell its last lead of the contest at 30-28. Brian Maxie, Bedarrious Collier, Tim Howard and Thomas each contributed points during the run.

Unfortunately, Wylie countered with a 9-0 run to take a 37-30 lead it would never surrender. It was 47-41 after the third period.

Terrell got within four points on two separate occasions in the final period, but only managed six points and two field goals as Wylie pulled away.

The Tigers' last points came on Kennedy's baseline drive that made it 54-47 at the 3:31 mark. Wylie took over from there, ending the game on an 8-0 run.

Terrell won't have to wait long for a chance to get back in the win column. The Tigers begin play Thursday in the 3rd Annual Spring Creek Holiday Classic at Mansfield Summit.

Terrell will open against Mansfield at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, and is just one of two Class 4A teams in the field of 16-team field.
