Thomas shoots Terrell past Mansfield at MISD Classic

MANSFIELD - The Terrell Runnin' Tigers got off to a slow start Thursday in the opening round of the Mansfield ISD Holiday Classic, but a high-scoring second half helped Terrell (4-2) pull out a 55-49 victory over Class 5A Mansfield (2-6).
Antwain Thomas scored a game-high 35 points to help Terrell erase a 24-10 halftime deficit and outscore Mansfield, 45-25, over the last two periods.
Terrell took a 35-33 lead into the final period after outscoring Mansfield 25-9 in the third quarter. The Tigers would also outscore Mansfield in the final frame, 20-16.
Daniel Shafer was the high man for Mansfield with 13 points while Drew Murray tossed in 12 and Cameron Frazier added eight.
Terrell advances to face Fort Worth Polytechnic (4-1), who defeated Odessa, 68-50, in the opening round Thursday. Terrell and FW Poly will play Friday at 5:30 p.m. Mansfield drops into the consolation bracket to face Odessa at 4 p.m.
Other tournament scores include Carrollton Creekview beating Timberview, 64-57, FW Southwest blowing by Euless Trinity, 106-74, South Grand Prairie beating Midland Lee, 71-60, Frisco Legacy topping Pasadena Memorial, 55-45, Summit hammering West Mesquite, 100-64 and Colleyville Heritage pulling out a 63-54 win over FW Eastern Hills.
FW Poly is led by the sibling duo of Chrys and Darius Richardson, who combined to score 48 of Poly's 68 points against Odessa.
Chrys scored a game-high 28 and Darius dropped in 20 more, helping Poly to leads of 21-12, 38-27 and 55-33. Steve Chatmon added nine and Aaron McCuin had eight as well.
FW Poly has tallied wins over Crowley (51-50), Arlington Lamar (71-62) and Fort Worth Paschal (87-65). Its only loss came in a 71-63 decision to Dallas Skyline on Nov. 17.
Thomas went over the 30-point mark for the second time in less than a week, dropping 38 on John Tyler last Friday. The senior is averaging 21.8 points per game this season. Terrell has faces Class 5A opponents in every game this season.
Should Terrell beat FW Poly, the Tigers would face the Creekview-FW Southwest winner at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. If Terrell loses, the Tigers will face the Creekview-FW Southwest loser at 11 a.m. Saturday.
