Officials want to know who played Grinch at park

Why would someone try and ruin Christmas?

That's what members of the Terrell Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau and community are asking after five decorations were stolen from the lighted Christmas drive in Ben Gill Park and lights and cords were damaged.

“The community spent their own time and money making this happen. It's a shame people [see] fit to remove them,” said Sarah Kegerreis, the chamber's director of tourism. “I've not a clue why anyone would do that and ruin Christmas for everyone.”

Terrell Police Service is searching for the culprits who stole Christmas decorations of Piglet, Puss-N-Boots, Finding Nemo, Scooby Doo and Shaggy, said TPS Capt. Arley Sansom. The items were valued at $400.

“They were stolen at different times,” Sansom said.

Kegerreis said they discovered the Puss-N-Boots decoration missing the first weekend of the lighted drive and Scooby Doo and Shaggy were found missing Dec. 9. The other two decorations were taken at unknown times.

“We've had one thing stolen during the season before,” Kegerreis said. “But we've never had this much taken from the park.”

Kegerreis said it's “time-consuming and hard work” putting up all the lights and decorations for the drive that ran on weekends from Nov. 30 to Sunday.

“But it's all worth it when you see the children's eyes light up after they see Santa Claus and the lights,” Kegerreis said.

Chamber members encourage anyone with information about the decorations to call TPS at (972) 551-6622.

“We would really like to have [the decorations] back,” Kegerreis said.

In other police activity, a thief fled with an estimated $900 after busting into the vending machines at Tidy Tiger, located at 1200 S. Virginia St. The thief broke the lock and pocketed the money.

Sansom said the thief's method of operation matches that involving several other coin-operated machine thefts that occurred recently. But it's unknown if it's the same people.
