Terrell's varsity soccer teams each opened what is sure to be a grueling district schedule Tuesday, but ended the night with different results.

The Lady Tigers (5-1, 1-0) got goals from Bree Jackson and Emily Davis in a 2-1 victory over Waxahachie's Lady Indians while J.D. Simmons' lone goal was not enough for the Tigers (2-2, 0-1) in a 3-1 loss to Waxahachie.

The Lady Tigers will return to Memorial Stadium on Friday to host Texas High, a team they beat, 2-0, last week during pool play in the Mount Pleasant tournament. The Tigers will be off until Tuesday, when they travel to Ferris for another district match.

The Tigers were without two defensive starters but had chances to score in the second half.

"We played hard, but made a few mistakes," coach Joe Stephens said. "We have to play tough and limit the mistakes on the defensive end. Two of their goals came off set plays."

Jacob Simmons allowed three goals but turned in a standout performance while being bombarded by Waxahachie shots. His save on an Indian penalty kick was one of the bright spots for the Tigers.

Jacob's older brother, J.D., turned in Terrell's only goal.

Waxahachie broke a scoreless tie with a corner kick at the 1:50 mark in the first half for a 1-0 lead. The Indians struck again in the second half with another goal for a 2-0 advantage before J.D. got the Tigers on the board with a penalty kick.

Just as the momentum seemed to shift to Terrell's side, Waxahachie put it away on a heads-up play.

The younger Simmons made a save on a Waxahachie penalty kick but another Indian was there to boot home the rebound for a 3-1 lead.

"Our defense showed grit considering two starters were out," Stephens said. "Reid Sherer played well organizing the defense. We will build on the positives and try to limit the negatives next time."

The Tiger junior varsity fought hard for a scoreless tie at Waxahachie.

The Lady Tigers upped their record to 5-1 and started district play on a positive note with a 2-1 victory over Waxahachie's Lady Indians.

Waxahachie scored just four minutes into the match for a 1-0 lead. Terrell coach John Lantrip said allowing the early goal was probably the best thing that could have happened.

"We were;nt playing very well and I think it woke us up a little," Lantrip said. "We realized we needed to pick up our game in order to win."

The Lady Tigers did just that, getting a goal from Davis early in the second half as she beat the Waxahachie keeper to a loose ball and put it in for a 1-1 tie. Davis later assisted on Jackson's goal with a corner kick midway through the second half.

Mikayla Clark turned away a potential game-tying opportunity when she stepped up to stop a Waxahachie player from getting an open shot late in the match. Jessica Powell, Hayden Neeley and the rest of the defense received praise from their coach.

"We played well in the second half, putting pressure on them and keeping them from getting the equalizer," Lantrip said. "Ashley Yates, Bree Jackson and Mikayla did a great job containing the midfield and Virginia [Potcinske] made some great saves."

"This was a great way to start district," Lantrip said. "Waxahachie is one of those teams that will be there in the end, fighting for a playoff spot. they're a good team and this was a good win."

Davis scored her fourth goal of the season and now has nine points (4G, 5A) this year. Jackson notched her third goal and fourth point (3G, A).

" The way I saw it the Waxahachie girls dominated most of the game. The Waxahachie web site had it 14-5 on shot totals in favor of them and that is how I seem to remember it. The first goal was questionable with the ball kicked out of the keepers hands as she had control, then all play stopped except for the scorer. The second goal was a screw up by teh waxa defender as she tried to clear a corner. No tigerette put it in the goal. Does the team benefitting get to have a girl receive the "points" for a goal another team scores?

hope the tiger girls get better play next time they face waxa or those other district favs: Red Oak, Corsicana, and Forney. "
