Local woman receives awards, medal for performance in Navy

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Devona M. Thomas, daughter of Sylvia and Von Carl Thomas of Kaufman, recently received a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, three Letters of Commendation and a Meritorious Mast while serving as the administration leading petty officer assigned to Executive Transport Detachment, Pacific located at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii.

Thomas received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for processing more than 40 directives, 50 evaluations and 50 awards. Additionally, she played a vital role in the efficiency of the command urinalysis program. She received her Letters of Commendation for processing more than 30 awards, reviewing and revising 15 command directives, and for her culinary abilities and customer service for the Commander, Fleet Logistics Support Wing evaluators, which contributed to the detachment receiving an overall grade of outstanding.

A Meritorious Mast is a certificate awarded by the commanding officer to publicly and officially commend a member of the command for noteworthy performance.

Thomas is a 1999 graduate of Terrell High School and joined the Navy in July 2000.
