Tigers' collapse in 54-47 defeat puts them in compromising situation
By Cliff Gibson: sports@terrelltribune.com
Eight seniors played their last game at the TISD Athletic Complex and the Terrell Tigers built a 19-point lead Friday.
Unfortunately, the West Mesquite Wranglers didn't seem to care.
The Wranglers (11-16, 7-6) clawed their way out of a 27-8 hole in the first half and limited Terrell (19-12, 7-6) to 13 points in the second half to escape with a 54-47 victory.
More importantly, the loss by Terrell could puts the Tigers in a 3-way tie for third place in district 10-4A with one game remaining. Forney is 6-6 entering Friday's game at Mesquite Poteet. Results of that game were not available at press time.
Terrell and Forney will meet Tuesday in a game that is for all the marbles. West Mesquite will entertain first-place Highland Park in a contest that should go to the Scots.
Terrell had things going its way early in this contest, jumping out to a 16-6 lead after on period courtesy of a pair of treys by Thomas and Brian Maxie's layup with 14 seconds left.
Thomas finished with a team-high 19 points, but scored just two in the second half. He hit four treys, raising his season total to 134, tops in the state an third nationally.
The second period picked up where the first left off, as the Tigers made it 21-6 on Thomas' third 3-pointer. He hit three free throws to make it 24-7 and after Sirron Fleming put in a foul shot, Maxie drove through the lane for two more, making it 27-8 midway through the second frame.
That's pretty much where Terrell's offense died as the Wranglers closed the half on an 18-7 run and Demarr Simmons connected from long distance at the buzzer, slicing the deficit to 34-26.
Neither team mustered much offense in the third period but the tigers were able to push the lead back into double-digits as Joel Wren stole the ball at midcourt and drove for a reverse layup to make it 40-30.
A Thomas jumper with two minutes left made it 43-32, the last points by either team in the period.
The Wrangler scored the first six points of the final period, cutting the lead to 43-38, before taking their first lead on Kendall Thomas' 3-point play, making it 46-45 with 1:42 to play. West Mesquite wouldn't trail again.
The Wranglers hit 6-of-6 free throws in the final 37 seconds to close the book on the Tigers.
