MR. BIG SHOT: Sharpshooter Thomas named District 10-4A's top offensive player
By Cliff Gibson: sports@terrelltribune.com
When you're one of the top 3-point shooters in the nation, it's almost a guarantee you'll be the top offensive player in your district.
Terrell senior Antwain Thomas can certainly attest to that, after drilling 148 shots from beyond the arc to finish third nationally in that category. His total was also the best across the state of Texas.
Thomas was chosen as District 10-4A's Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches in the district, after leading all players in the league with 21.9 points per game.
Highland Park and Richardson Pearce, co-champs in the district, collected the remainder of the superlatives and the largest number of selections among the first and second teams.
Thomas guided the Runnin Tigers to a 21-14 record and third-place finish in the district. After a subpar performance in the bi-district round, he nailed seven 3-point shots and scored a game-high 32 points before the Tigers fell short of an upset of state-ranked Whitehouse in the area round.
Thomas scored 30 or more points on eight occasions, including a season-high 38 in a victory over Class 5A John Tyler. He also eclipsed the 20-point mark in 20 of Terrell's 34 games.
Two more Tigers received all-district honors - sophomore J'Lil Herndon and senior Bedarrious Collier.
Herndon, who transferred from Kaufman before the season started, put up 9.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game while serving as an undersized (6-2) post player and was a first-team selection.
Collier made the second-team after scoring eight points and pulling down six rebounds per game. The 6-5 senior scored 21 points and ripped down 19 rebounds in Terrell's bi-district win over The Colony.
Forney had two players make the list as senior guard Desmond Rollins earned a first-team nod and senior guard Rollo Lawrence made the second-team.
Highland Park and Pearce each posted 13-1 district records and split the Most Valuable Player and Coach of the Year awards. The Scots put six players on the two teams while Pearce had four make the cut.
West Mesquite had three selections, Rockwall-Heath had two and Greenville and Mesquite Poteet each had one.
