NEWTON DELANO ‘LANEY’ POPE

Newton Delano “Laney” Pope was born in Laurel, Mississippi on Nov. 14, 1934 to Emmett Jones Pope and Bessie Mae Nowlin.  He proudly served in the National Guard, Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy. He was employed by the U.S. Treasury as an IRS Agent until his retirement in 1997.  His favorite hobby was woodworking, followed by yard work and genealogy.  He first married Lucille Mae Ryan of Springfield, Minn.  His second marriage was to Nancy Christina Row of Dallas.

Mr. Pope was preceded in death by a brother, Gilford Darlington Pope, sisters Lila Marie Grimes, Lyra Dianna Dalton and Doris Evelyn Goodwin.  He is survived by his wife Nancy Christina Row Pope of Willis Point; brothers Andrew David, Julius Loyd, William Hollis and Emmett Jerry Pope; sisters Ruth Elizabeth Carden and Katherine Collette Raley; children Teresa Lee Kinnick (Joe), Michael Delano Pope (Laura), Jeremy Laney Pope (Lucy); grandchildren Kelli Ann, Ethan Daniel, Emily Teresa, Mercedes Josette, Abigail Elizabeth and Lael Sophia Pope; and many beloved cousins, nephews and nieces. 

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 30. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 31. Both will be held at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, Miss., burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Laurel. 

Dr. Bob Price of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Terrell will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Operation Believe, Cornerstone Baptist Church, 113 Highway 205, Terrell, TX 75160. 

Memory Chapel is in charge of services.
