Books and Crannies rewires historic theater sign

Nostalgia may not have the same attraction for everyone, but for Books and Crannies owners Ron and Gayle Harris, the rewiring of the historic Iris theater sign that hangs in front of their Moore Avenue bookstore is long overdue.
The rewiring of the sign is the latest endeavor by the Harrises to offer Terrell residents a tribute to the fond memories they share of the historic theater.
“It is a tribute to the history of our building,” Gayle said.
The Iris operated as a movie theater from the time it was built in 1926 until the last movie was shown in 2001. Although the Harrises converted the majority of the building into a bookstore after they purchased it, they decided they wanted to give the community a gift so they renovated the back of the building into a small theater.
Now, on the second and fourth Friday of every month, Terrell residents can relive the earlier days of the iris by viewing classic movies at the theater. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and close by 7 p.m. Cokes and popcorn are available. Although there is no charge for the movie, tips are appreciated.
This month’s features include “Torn Curtain,” starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews, on Aug. 8 and “Harvey,” starring Jimmy Stewart, on Aug. 22.

" Once it is re-lit the Iris sign will be a beacon for the downtown once again - as it should be! Ron and Gayle Harris deserve a great award for all they've given to Terrell - a great bookstore, free movies, wonderful plays, their work for the Downtown Association, and so much more. Thank you Ron & Gayle for this!! "
