Mother, daughter team up to provide for troops

Kaufman resident Shelly Talbott has been working as a volunteer for Soldiers’ Angels since April of 2004. Talbott’s 12-year-old daughter Torie, a seventh grader at O.P. Norman Jr. High in Kaufman, is also involved in the program.
“I have always sent letters and cards to soldiers even before 9/11,” Shelly said. “My parents, brother-in-law and grandfather were all veterans. I have a special place in my heart for soldiers and they should all know there is someone who cares and they are not forgotten.”
Soldiers’ Angels is a national organization founded by the mother of two American soldiers.
They are a non-profit organization providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard and their families.
“If I was in their position I would like to receive stuff from people across the world who care,” Torie said.
The organization is involved in more than 20 operations which include sending food, clothing, blankets, letters, cards, scarves, personal items and much more to the soldiers.
Soldiers can also be adopted from their Web site.
Talbott is working in Kaufman County on a project called Blankets of Belief to be sent this winter to soldiers overseas.
The organization hopes to send 180,000 handmade blankets to soldiers during the holidays to let them know someone back home remembers them.
Assistance from the community is needed to help the organization reach its goal. Handmade blankets filled with personal care items, packets of coffee, socks and other items will be sent to soldiers overseas.
The blankets should be at least 45 inches wide by 65 inches long and should only be made of red, white, blue and patriotic patterns. The Web site has specific information on the blankets and patterns for no-sew fleece blankets.
Drop-off locations have not been established at this time but you can contact Shelly at shellytalbott@hotmail.com. It is requested that you specify in the subject line of the e-mail either Soldiers’ Angels or Blankets of Belief.
