QB injury puts added pressure on Tiger D

Keilion Scott (24) and Colton Bodine (2) bottled up R.L. Turner quarterback Mikal Patterson in a 20-0 victory last week and will lead the Terrell defense against a dangerous North Lamar offensive attack Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Terrell’s defense put on quite a show in the Tigers’ 2008 debut, forcing seven turnovers in a 20-0 shutout victory over Carrollton R.L. Turner.

Chances are they’ll need another effort like that Friday when the Tigers (1-0) face a potent North Lamar offense at Memorial Stadium. KPYK 1570-AM will broadcast the game live, beginning with the pregame show at 7:05 p.m.

Logan Smith, Terrell’s opening-day starter at quarterback, will be out for at least six weeks due to injuries suffered last week. Smith played just nine snaps and was injured while running out of the pocket in the first quarter.

Backup quarterback Barrett Calverly suffered through some jitters in his first varsity action and fumbled the exchange from center four times in the third period.

Despite the miscues, Calverly did not commit a turnover – a positive sign for Terrell – and was under center for two of Terrell’s three scoring drives.

He winded up completing just 1-of-4 passes for 17 yards and carried 13 times for minus-22 yards.

Hopefully, his three quarters of playing time will be enough to gain some much-needed maturity before facing the Class 3A Panthers (0-1).

Four big plays by Liberty-Eylau made all the difference in North Lamar’s 35-28 loss to the Leopards last week.

The Panthers racked up a huge advantage in total yards (435-217) and first downs (24-6) but couldn’t neutralize the big play ability of the Leopards.

North Lamar tied the game at 14-14 just before halftime but L-E would return the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.

On the Panthers’ first series of the second half, they would drive the ball down to the Leopards’ 34, but had a 4th and 1 play stuffed for no gain.

The Leopards scored on the next play, a 67-yard end-around play.

Midway through the fourth period, L-E returned an interception 58 yards for another score and a 35-21 lead.

North Lamar running back A.J. George rushed for 167 yards and three TDs on 25 carries, while quarterback Cody Sellers passed for a career-high 154 yards on 11-of-20 passing. He also ran for a score.

Kaleb Price picked up 69 yards on 13 carries as the Panthers gained 281 yards on the ground.

Ryan White led the North Lamar receivers with 72 yards on three catches, while Harrison Murphey had four grabs for 48 yards and DeShantis Braxton had two catches for 16 yards. T.J. Shirley and Hunter Berry each hauled in one pass.

Terrell gained just 204 total yards in its opener, with 187 coming on the ground.

Marquice Strange had 74 yards on just five carries, scoring on runs of 4 and 41 yards. He also pulled in Terrell’s only reception for 17 yards.

James Mays picked up 73 yards on 20 carries and scored a 9-yard touchdown. Keilion Scott churned out 51 yards on eight totes.

The defense stole the show, as the Tigers picked off four passes and recovered three fumbles.

Justin Pendleton had two interceptions, while Brodrick Wells and Joel Wren each had one.

Kentavious Jackson had a sack and forced a fumble and the defensive line of Colton Bodine, Kelly Williams, Dwight Kennedy and Johnny Green wrecked havoc in the Turner backfield.

Melvin Lee recovered two Lion fumbles and Scott came up with the third.

The Tiger defense limited R.L. Turner – which was 0-10 last season playing in Class 5A – to just 189 total yards, 105 in the air and 84 on the ground.

Terrell’s varsity cheerleaders as well as the Tigerettes will be recognized prior to Friday’s game, which will kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
