Terrell resident recovering from hunting accident

Published: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 12:14 PM CST
Terrell resident Ron Carney is continuing to recover from injuries he received in a hunting accident on Oct. 18 in Vermont. With mounting expenses, friends are working to raise funds to help the family pay for medical costs not covered by insurance.

According to his wife, Lisa, Ron arrived in Vermont on Oct. 17. On the afternoon of Oct. 18, a group of guys went out hunting. When the other hunters got ready to come in from the woods, they tried to call Ron on his cell phone and two-way radio, but he didn’t answer. Ron’s hunting companions thought maybe he just didn’t have a signal, but when they went to his stand to look for him, they found him unconscious. He had fallen 18 feet, taking out two limbs on the way down.

Ron’s friends immediately called for emergency services. When the emergency personnel arrived, it took them and hour and a half to get him out. His injuries included a collapsed lung, bruised lungs, a fractured left ankle, a fractured vertebrae and a closed head brain injury.

Ron spent almost two weeks in ICU in Vermont. He then traveled back to Dallas for rehabilitation via air ambulance, an expense not covered by insurance. He had to be monitored and required a feeding tube throughout the flight.

Although Ron has undergone surgery and has started the long road to recovery, Pam said her husband is very restless and still has a lot of healing to do before he will be able to function independently.

Lisa, who works in a small office, said the family is having hard time meeting expenses, especially since Carney was self employed as a home remodeler. Now the family is having to rely solely on Lisa’s salary.

“Thanks to some of our wonderful friends, we got him home but the expense was extensive,” Carney said.

Lisa said her income is simply not enough.

“ I am doing the best I can right now but it’s hard. I know that God will get us through this, but I am not sure what shape we will be in financially once it’s all said and done.

Lisa said she has not yet received any hospital bills yet, but she knows they are forthcoming.

“I will have to meet the remainder of our deductible, which is high because I work in a small office. Our benefit year started over on Nov. 1 so that is another deductible to meet,” Lisa said.

Regardless of her bleak financial situation, Lisa said she is thankful to have her husband alive and is trusting God to provide.

“Although he is healing and starting to understand more of what is going on, we still have a way to go for him to be back to his old self again,” Lisa said.

A benefit account has been set up in Ron’s name at American National Bank. Donations can be mailed to ANB, FBO Ron (Bubba) Carney, P.O. Box 40, Terrell 75160.
