FORMER TIGERS EARN BOWL VICTORIES
Harris, McCain conclude college football season with upset victories
By Cliff Gibson: sports@terrelltribune.com
There was something strange about the bowl victories by Ole Miss and Utah on Jan. 2.
It could have been the fact that both teams were underdogs heading into their respective contests.
But maybe it was the way Terrell was represented by each team as well – as a winner.
Both Ole Miss and Utah not only pulled off upsets Friday, but did so with former Terrell Tigers on the field.
These former Tigers didn’t just have their name on the roster, each made a difference on the field as well.
Ex-Tigers Gerald Harris and Brice McCain wrapped up the 2008 college football season with impressive victories.
Harris and his Ole Miss teammates romped over Texas Tech by a 47-34 count in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
Harris, a 6-5, 250-pound tight end, was a star in his homecoming to Texas, catching two passes for 29 yards, and scoring on both catches.
With the Rebels trailing 14-0 in the first period, Harris hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jevan Snead to make it 14-7.
In the second period, trailing 21-14, Harris went down the middle for a 21-yard scoring pass from Snead to tie the game and take the lead away from Texas Tech for good.
Harris played in all 13 games for the Rebels (9-4) this year, catching seven passes for 84 yards with four touchdowns.
Harris played his first two years at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana before earning a scholarship to play at Mississippi.
McCain was no stranger to bowl games, having played in and won three previous bowl games with the Utes.
On Friday, McCain and the Utah defense dismantled Alabama for a 31-17 Sugar Bowl victory to complete a perfect 13-0 season and capture a BCS bowl victory for the second time in school history.
McCain played in four bowl games, beginning with the 2005 Emerald Bowl (a 38-10 win over Georgia Tech), the 2006 Armed Forces Bowl (won 25-13 over Tulsa), the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl (won over Navy, 35-32) and ending with the 2009 Sugar Bowl.
McCain made just one tackle in the victory over Alabama, but ends his career as one of the top defensive backs in school history.
McCain, a 5-11, 182-pound cornerback, has been a full-time starter since his sophomore year and made 35 tackles this season, including two for loss, with one interception, one fumble recovery and five pass breakups. McCain is a four-year letterman, also seeing playing time as a freshman at Utah.

" Great job guys! Terrell (the town, not Owens) is proud of you both. "
