THS soccer girls rout Sherman in opener
Lady Tigers 5 • Sherman 1
SHERMAN – Operation: Redemption got off to a successful start for the Terrell Lady Tigers.
Terrell (1-0) dominated both ends of the field against Sherman (0-1) and rolled to a 5-1 victory in its 2009 season-opener.
Emily Davis – the returning Offensive Player of the Year in District 10-4A – scored two first half goals to help the Lady Tigers to a 4-0 lead at the break.
“We moved the ball around really well and controlled both ends of the field for most of the game,” coach John Lantrip said. “Sherman is a good team that is constantly in the playoffs.”
Davis started the scoring with a penalty kick just five minutes into the game.
10 minutes later, Bre Jackson scored to make it 2-0 and Davis added another at the 20-minute mark.
Ali May scored with five minutes remaining in the half as Terrell posted a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal in the half.
In the second half, Ashley Yates scored on a free kick from 25 yards out before Sherman finally got on the scoreboard with about 10 minutes to play.
“It was nice to be able to rest a lot of players,” Lantrip said. “Everyone got to play quite a few minutes and the whole team contributed on the field. We ended up out-shooting them, 24-8.”
The Lady Tigers will make a long trip Friday to Abilene to compete in the West Texas Invitational. Terrell will face Abilene Cooper in Friday’s first round.
“Now the fun really starts in Abilene, but I think we are ready,” Lantrip said.
