Terrell District 3 City Councilwoman Mayrani Velazquez retained her seat on the city council Tuesday night by defeating Jonathan Preston 278-104 in a runoff election.

Velazquez, who was appointed to the council in May 2019, has now won the job outright.

“A big thank you to District 3 for their vote and confidence in our campaign. I am honored to have been voted in by our community to represent the City of Terrell, District 3. Our big win would not have been possible without our volunteers, donors, and supporters.

“I remain committed to placing our community first. As the results came in tonight, I couldn't have been in any better place than in our regular City Council meeting working for you. We still have a lot of work to do and I can't do it without you. Please continue to reach out to me about any concerns or ideas you have to make all of Terrell the best it can be,” Velazquez said in a social media post.

During the general election on Nov. 3, Velazquez captured 614 votes, or 49.16%. Preston finished second with 435 votes, or 37.7%. A third candidate, Thomas Brown, received 205 votes, or 16.14%. Because no candidate received more than 50%, a runoff between the top two finishers was required.

Velazquez is a lifelong resident of Terrell and a Terrell High School graduate. She has performed countless hours of community volunteer work and served as vice chair of the Terrell Park Board from January 2016 through February of 2019. She recommended improvements to the park system reflected in the 2017 Parks Master Plan. Today, she is a member of the city’s PADIC (Parks and Downtown Improvement Corp.) board and is active in many community endeavors.

Velazquez is employed at Children’s Health in Dallas.
