A 14-year-old boy was in custody Wednesday at the Van Zandt County Juvenile Detention Facility and a 1-year-old child was dead after being shot Tuesday in the 2100 block of Juniper Drive at the Windmill Farms Community.
Another child, age 9, was at a hospital in Dallas with an injury to his hand, according to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Kaufman County deputies responded to the report of an accidental shooting. The caller reported the victim to be a 1-year-old child. A second victim was reported to have an injury to the hand. Upon arrival, a deputy started CPR on the infant until the arrival of EMS.
A second victim, a 9-year-old male, had a non-life-threatening injury to the hand and was transported to a hospital in Dallas; his condition was listed as good on Wednesday.
The 1-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two other minors were in residence at the time, one being a sibling to the two victims and the other a 14-year-old neighbor.
The sheriff’s department obtained a search warrant for the residence of the 14-year-old.
Investigators interviewed the 14-year-old male and charged him with unlawful carrying weapons, a Class A misdemeanor, and making a firearm accessible to a child, also a Class A misdemeanor.
