A man allegedly was shot by his brother during an argument early the morning of July 28 in the 3000 block of Granite Rock in the Windmill Farms community near Forney, according to the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about 1:20 a.m. The caller reported that his brother shot him in the hand. The suspect was identified as Shawn Garland, 21, of Forney, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

During an argument between the brothers, Shawn Garland reportedly retrieved a gun and discharged it in the residence several times before a round struck the victim in the hand, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The victim’s girlfriend and 12-month-old child were present during the altercation. After the victim was shot, the girlfriend fled with the child to another room. The suspect reportedly pursued them and pointed a gun to the head of both the girlfriend and child before fleeing the residence. Neither was injured in the assault, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot, and a search of the area commenced. With assistance from Forney police, Shawn Garland was located and taken into custody without incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Garland was taken to the Kaufman County Jail awaiting arraignment on three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The victim of the shooting was transported to Baylor Hospital in Dallas with non-life threatening injuries.

He has since been treated and released.
