The Terrell City Council District 3 race is headed for a runoff election as none of the three candidates secured 51% of the vote, which is needed to claim the seat outright.

Incumbent Mayrani Velazquez came close, claiming 612 votes, or 49.16% of the vote. She will be pitted against Jonathan Preston, who received 432 votes, or 37.70%. Thomas Brown came in third with 201 votes, or 16.14%, according to unofficial election results tabulated by Kaufman County.

It is not yet known when the runoff race will be held. Kaufman County, which the city contracts with to conduct elections in Terrell, has between 20 and 45 days after the general election to hold the runoff. After the runoff, the winning candidate will be seated at the following city council meeting, according to Terrell City Secretary Dawn Steil.

Also, District 5 incumbent Tim Royce, who was alone on the ballot, took in 1,427 votes, or 100% of those cast to secure another term on the council.
