This week, as we gather with friends and family to celebrate the birth of our nation, I'm reminded we are a nation based on the idea that all people are created equal. Our laws and their universal application guarantee this fact, which is why our immigration system - as the most generous and welcoming nation in the world - must be respected. Let us secure our nation, protect our citizens, and ensure we can continue to welcome immigrants for years to come.

As I'm sure you've noticed, Washington's dysfunction and partisan obstructionism have been on full display over the past several weeks. House Democrats, championed by their extreme left wing, stood in the way of a bipartisan effort to provide much-needed funding for our men and women in law enforcement by demanding a cut in funding for ICE. In a striking defeat, House Democrats abandoned their partisan demands and passed the bill, highlighting the increasing divisions within their party.

The funding Congress provided will temporarily relieve some of the pressure faced by our law enforcement officials, but we are far from fixing the problem. We must maintain our focus and continue working toward a solution to the crisis on our southern border. Calls to defund ICE and decriminalize illegal entries would only serve to weaken our country and imperil our citizens, especially those in border states like Texas. Under President Trump's leadership, we will secure our border and continue making this country great again.

As I return to Washington this next week I’m grateful for the encouragement of my fellow Texans who share my positions on border security, immigration, and my unwavering support of President Trump’s pro-America agenda. The people of rural Texas have been strong allies with me in our fight to protect our conservative way of life. I thank you, and ask you to join me in praying for our nation as we celebrate her birth.

God bless the United States of America!
