Rick Carmona, Mayor of Terrell, presented a proclamation on Thursday, June 13, proclaiming Wednesday, June 19, 2019 in Terrell as “Juneteenth Freedom Day”.
The proclamation was issued during the Special City Council Meeting and Workshop inside the City of Terrell Council Chambers.
Members from the Association of Breezy Hill Park were there to accept the proclamation.
It was also the first proclamation issued by Carmona as Mayor of Terrell.
“This is my first proclamation to read. I can think of no better one for me personally to do,” Carmona said.
The Association of Breezy Hill Park will host its third annual Juneteenth Celebration from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19. A family friendly event that is open to the public. The event will have free food and entertainment.
“We certainly accept this proclamation and on behalf of the Association of Breezy Hill Park we thank you. We’re humbled by the acceptance and power of this event. Juneteenth is a celebration for all and we thank you for it,” Harold Wilson, member of the Association of Breezy Hill Park, said.
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. Its name is a blend of "June" and "nineteenth", the date of its celebration. Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in 45 states.
Local Juneteenth celebration have become a staple of the summer calendar, drawing large crows together from Terrell and beyond to commemorate the holiday.
