A suspicious package was discovered around 6 a.m. on Wednesday near the Furlough Middle School sixth grade wing.

The Terrell Independent School District police department, Terrell police department and Garland police department bomb unit responded to the scene.

After inspection, the package contained papers and the address on the package was intended for a resident in the nearby apartment complex.

“There was no potential threat of danger at any time,” Terrell police department captain A.D. Sansom said in a press release.

Out of an abundance of caution, a safety perimeter was established and students arriving were diverted to an alternate entrance of the school.

Also, a contingent plan was in place for all Furlough Middle School buses and parents drop-offs to be rerouted to the Terrell High School athletic complex. Furlough Middle School staff was to also report to the athletic complex.

“As always and with recent events in the Austin area, all citizens are asked to remain very alert, active and diligent in their observations,” Sansom said. “Report anything suspicions to authorities and do not handle, approach or attempt close examination of any packages that look out of the ordinary or were not expected.”
