Beverly Katherine Ownby Brittain

Beverly Katherine Ownby Brittain, longtime resident of Terrell, passed away peacefully into the presence of her Savior on the evening of July 24, 2020. Beverly was born November 2, 1927 in Ennis, TX to Clifford and Katherine (Hardin) Ownby and she was met in Heaven by her parents, her husband, T. Manley Brittain, Jr., granddaughter, Jennifer Wood, and siblings: Clifford Hardin (Buddy) Ownby and Ellen Rosson.

Beverly graduated from Lamar High School in Houston, Tx after which she attended, and graduated from, Texas State College for Women (now known as Texas Women’s University) in 1949 with a degree in Fashion Design. During her collegiate career, she created one of a kind clothing designs that were truly magazine quality. On June 20, 1949, she married the love of her life, Manley Brittain, of Terrell, where they made their home and raised a family. Beverly loved to serve her community and she jumped right in to help with many civic and organizational groups with artistic and scholastic clubs being her favorite. She and Manley were longtime and active members of First United Methodist Church where her faith and friendship were constants in the church’s activities and outreach. Beverly had the soul of an artist and she saw beauty in everyday objects and circumstances. She was a talented painter who created colorful art that continues to inspire others. She was a founding member of the Friends of Hulsey Library where she also served on the advisory board for over 43 years and also had memberships in several other clubs including the Pilot Club, TISD Band and Tigerette Parent Organizations and numerous committees at First United Methodist Church in Terrell. Beverly was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, precious great grandmother, sister and friend and her gentle smile and generous spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters: Diane Bridges and husband, Dennis, of Terrell, Claire Brittain of Terrell, Laura Wood and husband, Dan, of Terrell, and Katherine Brittain and wife, Buffy, of Terrell; grandchildren: Meredith Woosley and husband, Chad, of Kaufman, Natalie Koets of Terrell, Michael Koets and wife, Savanah, of Gentry, Ark., Elizabeth Smith and husband, Chris, of Terrell, and Matthew Linkous of Forney; great grandchildren: Braeden and Leighton Woosley, Landon and Lila Kate Smith; sister, Margaret Perkins of Houston, TX; sister-in-law, Barbara Ownby of Houston, TX as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church family and a host of friends, all of whom loved Beverly greatly.

A private interment will be held at Oakland Memorial Park where Beverly will be laid to rest next to Manley. For those wishing to honor her legacy, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 503 College St, Terrell, 75160 or to the Friends of Hulsey Public Library, 301 N. Rockwall Ave., Terrell, 75160 or at Beverly’s family would like to extend special words of gratitude to her loving caregivers: Pam, Shae, Janie, Desiree, Keisha, Aasia, Jackie and Mimi and also to Dr. Angela Ozment and the caring staff at Broadmoor Medical Lodge in Rockwall.
