In my last article I explained how Terrell provides current and prospective residents a sense of place—a community with unique qualities where they’d like to live, work and raise a family. A place to call home. Our Terrell Economic Development President, Ray Dunlap, also recently wrote about how our wonderful school district here in Terrell impacts our economy. Today, I’d like to take both of those a step further and discuss the role our school district plays in giving residents a sense of place.

Earlier this month, the Texas Education Agency released the 2019 accountability ratings. You likely know by now that Terrell ISD improved from an overall C rating in 2018 to a B rating in 2019. What you may not know is that our actual score this year was 87 compared to last year’s score of 75. That’s a 16% improvement, which is pretty momentous. To put it into perspective, Terrell’s improvement as a percentage was the highest among other districts in Kaufman County. We fully expect that momentum to continue thanks to the hard work of our administration, faculty, staff, and students.

So how does this relate to providing residents a sense of place?

If you’re a parent who has ever been in the position of relocating your family, you know all that goes into choosing your new home. It’s not simply the neighborhood, the house, affordability, and location convenience. Those are key factors, yes. But if you have pre-school or school-aged children or are considering starting a family and want to establish your family in a community long term, it’s likely that one of the top priorities for you is choosing a home in a good school district.

Accountability ratings are one of the most referenced performance indicators for a school district, or a specific school campus. A demonstrated year-over-year improvement is promising and signals that Terrell ISD is a district that is invested in the success of its students. Other things families may look for in a school home for their children may be technology, small class sizes, diversity, extracurricular activities, after-school programs, routine communication, and state-of-the-art facilities. Terrell ISD checks all of these boxes.

For parents with older students, career pathways and money management skills are important. Or the opportunity for their son or daughter to earn a free Associates Degree by the time they graduate high school. Terrell ISD offers these as well.

Terrell ISD has also established other year-round programs and facilities for students of all ages to enjoy and benefit from, such as the Excellence Center for Enhanced Learning (ExCEL) which offers summer learning and recreation programs.

With all that Terrell ISD has to offer and the continuous proven improvements, Terrell is the perfect place for families looking for a school district that will serve their kids well for years to come.
