Terrell High School senior Khalid Johnson scored three touchdowns on three receptions for 167 yards but Hallsville was able to walk out of Terrell Memorial Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30 with a 33-21 victory.
This was Terrell’s (0-1) first game of the season and was the first game for new head coach Marvin Sedberry Jr. This was the second year in a row Hallsville (1-0) defeated Terrell after winning 27-7 last season.
Terrell went up 7-0 in the first quarter after Johnson made a wonderful 30-yard touchdown reception in the end-zone from Terrell senior quarterback Trey Lunsford. Terrell senior Christian Nunez made the extra-point for Terrell.
Terrell looked to go up 10-0 in the second quarter by attempting a 32-yard field goal but the attempt was blocked by Hallsville’s Buck Buchanan.
Hallsville tied the game at 7-7 after Carter Rogas connected with Nolan Sirmans on a 14-yard touchdown pass. Hallsville executed a Statue of Liberty run on fourth down to keep the scoring drive alive.
Both teams were tied at 7-7 heading into halftime.
Terrell scored on its opening offensive play in the second half as Lunsford threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Johnson to put the Tigers up 14-7 in the third quarter.
After that, Hallsville scored on four straight touchdowns to take control of the game.
Its first touchdown was an 8-yard touchdown run by running back Trey Fulton with 7:31 left in the third quarter.
Four minutes later, Rogas dived into the end zone on a 3-yard run as Hallsville took a 20-14 lead into the fourth quarter. The extra point was missed.
With 5:18 remaining in the fourth quarter, Rojas threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Trey Ford to give Hallsville a 26-14 lead. The two point conversion failed.
Hallsville went up 33-14 after Fulton scored on a 16-yard touchdown run with 3:10 left in the game.
Terrell scored its last touchdown with 1:01 left to play on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Lunsford to Johnson.
Terrell traveled to play Paris High School at Wildcat Stadium in Paris on Friday, Sept. 6.
Lunsford finished the game with three touchdown passes on 4-of-7 passing for 175 yards. Senior Gabriel Wright was the leading rusher for Terrell with seven carries for 63 yards. Terrell senior Jaquavious Morris led the team in tackles with 12.
Nunez was 3-of-3 on extra point attempts.
