Mike Shields

Terrell High School varsity football coach Mike Shields is leaving Terrell to become the next athletic director and head football coach at McGregor High School.

Shields coached Terrell from 2014 to 2018 and compiled a 32-24 overall record and a 19-15-district record.

Terrell was co-district champions in 2016. In 2015, Terrell were outright district champions. Terrell won three straight bi-district championships from 2014-16.

“We wish only the best for Coach Shields and thank him for the great work he did for Terrell ISD. We will now begin our search for his replacement,” Buster Leaf, Terrell athletic director, said in a statement.

McGregor is a Class 3A school and is 27 miles southwest of Waco. Shields is replacing head coach Judd Thrash after Thrash agreed to a buyout of his contract in February. McGregor High School varsity football were state finalist in 1979 and 1987.

Shields is reportedly moving closer to Waco to live closer to his mother. Shields is a native from the Waco area as he graduated from Reicher High School which is in Waco. He also received his master’s degree from Baylor University, which is also in Waco. 

In 2014, Shields first season as Terrell head coach, Terrell went 8-4 overall and 4-3 in district competing in Class 5A. Terrell finished fourth in district and were bi-district champions after beating Hillcrest 23-7. Terrell lost 43-20 to Heritage in the area round.

In 2015, Terrell won its first district championship since 1997 after Terrell defeated Mesquite Poteet 27-16 in the regular season finale. Terrell was also bi-district champions after beating Dallas Woodrow Wilson 49-13 and Terrell was crowned area champions after beating Lovejoy 28-27 in overtime. Terrell lost 40-21 to Lancaster in regionals. Terrell competed in Class 5A in 2015 and went 11-2 overall and 7-0 in district.

In 2016, Terrell beat Van 19-14 in the regular season finale to force a three-way district championship between Van, Terrell and Kaufman. Terrell beat North Lamar 42-13 to be bi-district champions. Terrell lost 15-7 to Kennedale in the area round. Terrell competed in Class 4A in 2016 and went 9-3 overall and 5-1 in district.

In 2017, Terrell had its first losing season under Shields as Terrell went 3-7 overall and 2-4 in district. Terrell had wins over Forney, Athens and Mabank this season. Terrell competed in Class 4A.

In 2018, Terrell went back to Class 5A and finished with a 1-8 overall record and 1-7 district record. Terrell’s lone win was over Forney.
