1916 - 2022

Robert La Rue, 106, longtime and well-known resident of Terrell, passed away on Sept. 14, 2022. Robert was born Feb. 19, 1916, in Rockwall, to David William and Ima Ramie (Garrett) La Rue, both of whom preceded him in death along with his wife, Frances La Rue, his siblings: Orville La Rue, Jessie Stanfield, Margie Hawkins, and Wanda Pierce and great grandson, Zachary Guzman.

Robert grew up in Chisholm since the age of 2 and moved to Terrell in 1923 where he lived until his passing. He married the love of his life, Frances, on Sept. 2, 1939, and they were inseparable until her passing in 2009.In 1945, Robert began working at Texas Power and Light for many years as a dedicated employee driving the utility trucks and then becoming a meter reader until his ‘first’ retirement. Never one to stay idle, he began working for Jim McGinty at McGinty’s Hardware for several more years leading to ‘second’ and ‘third’ retirements as he was always invited back to help for a few days that, due to his friendly personality and great knowledge, turned into additional months and years! When not working, Robert had a love for gardening and working on tractors. His garden harvest was looked forward to by his family and others in that Robert was always willing to share his bounty. He loved growing tomatoes, black-eyed peas, blackberries, and anything else that he had for his seasonal planting schedule. His grandkids have the best memories of picking their own fruits and vegetables as they helped him and Frances also shell peas at the house. He and Frances were longtime and active members of First Church of Nazarene in Terrell where their smiling faces would always welcome fellow members and visitors. Recently, he was recognized as the oldest living resident of Oak Ridge and was honored to have a city park dedicated to him, recognizing his long life of helping others. Robert will leave a legacy of service to others, a countenance of gentleness and seeing the best in others and a steadfast heart for his Lord and his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Janelle Davis, of Terrell; grandchildren: Theresa Davis-Wilson and husband, Kerry, of Summerfield, NC, Cindy Klemmer and husband, Mike, of Buda, TX, Kerry Guzman and husband, Rolando, of Terrell and John Burson, Jr. of Round Lake, Ill.; great grandchildren: Jessica, Brian, Brianna, Kristina and Brandon; 10 great-great grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family, church family and a host of many friends.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Max Slayton Funeral Chapel with interment to follow at Heath Cemetery. Mr. La Rue’s family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, at the funeral home. For those wishing, memorials may be made in honor of Robert to Faith Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, 1104 Griffith, Terrell, 75160.
