Merlene Davis Scott was the third of three daughters born to Granvil “Buddy” Davis and Mary Willis Davis on Nov. 19, 1928, in Hallsville, Texas. She departed this life Feb. 27, 2022, peacefully at home surrounded by those who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband (James, “JB”), her youngest daughter (Sheri), her parents, and her two sisters (Mabel and Glo Dean).

Merlene was a gifted student, starting first grade at the age of three and graduating from high school in Longview, Texas at fifteen years of age. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Elementary Education from Prairie View A&M University. Both Merlene and JB were educators in Mexia, Texas before moving to Terrell, Texas. Merlene taught first grade at JFK Elementary School in Terrell for many years before becoming its Vice Principal.

Merlene was a faithful member of the West End Street Church of Christ in Terrell for over 60 years, serving as a Bible Class teacher for the youth. She was also instrumental in raising funds for Southwestern Christian College as the Coordinator of their National Dinner Day. She loved to cook and especially bake. Her “apple crunch cake” and “brown sugar pie’ were crowd favorites.

Merlene Davis Scott leaves to carry her memory; two daughters, Bernadette Burrus (James) and Paulette Bunton (Lee); five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
