Sam E. Hanes ended his contribution on Earth on May 9, 2023.

Sam was born in Dallas on May 8, 1927.

He loved scouting and was active in the Boy Scouts as a youngster.

Sam served in the US Coast Guard during WW II and saw action in the Pacific and Europe. He served in the honor guard at President Roosevelt’s funeral. Sam studied insurance after the war and was employed in the insurance industry for 40 years. He retired from the Royal Insurance Group in 1992.

He was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Terrell and he also served many years with the Gideons International in Kaufman County.

Sam is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Patsy Lanier Hanes and his second wife of 15 years, Shirley Neill Hanes; his parents, Sam and Syble Hanes and his brother, Don Hanes.

He is survived by his sons: Greg Hanes and wife, Barb, of West Monroe, LA and Blake Hanes of Waco, TX; grandchildren: Jason Hanes and wife, Rebecca of Benton, LA, Jennifer Hanes of West Monroe, LA; Allison Noland and husband, Stephen, of West Monroe, LA and Jake Hanes of Waco; two great grandsons, one great granddaughter and one great-great granddaughter as well as very special sisters-in-law, Connie Wallace and her husband, Don, of Mesquite, TX, and Willowdeen Lindsey, of Terrell,, along with dear friends, Walter and Kay Stinnett of Terrell, TX.

His family received friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday, May 15, 2023, at Max Slayton Funeral Chapel with a graveside service at 3 p.m., Monday, at Restland Memorial Park.
