HISTORICAL REMNANT GIFTED TO COUNTY

Kaufman County was founded more 174 years ago in 1848 and recently the county became the recipient of an amazing display of its history. A historical records display, now displayed in a luxurious frame, was presented to the county at the Aug. 10 commissioners’ court meeting.

County mourns passing of deputy fire marshal

Kaufman County officials are mourning the loss off one of their own this week with news that John Grafflin, a longtime deputy fire marshal, had passed away. The Kaufman County Fire Marshal’s Office posted a notice online stating, “It is with heavy hearts that our office announces the passing of John Grafflin – Kaufman County Deputy Fire Marshal.

Public hearing to consider tax rate freeze scheduled

The Terrell City Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m., Aug. 24 to hear comments regarding consideration of a proposed age 65 and older property tax freeze. Following the public hearing, council will consider on first reading an ordinance that would grant the freezing of ad valorem taxes for individuals 65 and older with a residence homestead exemption.

Sales tax revenues climb 32 percent

The city of Terrell set the pace for Kaufman County in the month of August according to the Texas State Comptroller’s Office, seeing collections climb $413,721.12 when comparing against the same calendar month from the previous year.

Commercial driver convicted of DWI

Kaufman County District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley announced on Tuesday, the conviction of Gerald Lowrey, 61, for driving while intoxicated. On August 11, 2021, following a one-day trial before the Honorable Tracy Gray in the County Court at Law of Kaufman County, a jury found Lowrey guilty.

Aug. 28: Sixth annual Lone Star CASA Aim to End Child Abuse Clay Shoot. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m., Texas Gun Ranch 15950 State Highway 205, Terrell. First place individual and team prizes will be presented. Events also feature a silent auction and a raffle for a Browning 725 Sporting, 20 gauge over/under shotgun.

The NCAA is allowing student-athletes to profit off endorsements. College players can now receive financial benefits from the use of their name, likeness, and image. The NCAA calls this the NLI. Will this be a way recruiters lure high school players to their college in the future? Although a high school player cannot receive money for their name, likeness, and image; if the player graduates early and enrolls in college, then as college students they become eligible for the NLI.
