More than 600 new laws signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott went into effect Sept. 1. The new state laws — including one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country, the right to carry handguns both concealed and openly without a license, changes to election law and a bill allowing restaurants to sell alcohol to go — were passed during the regular session of the legislature, which ended May 31. The House and Senate adjourned their second special session Thursday night.

Enrollment is open for Texas Tuition Promise Fund

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds families that enrollment in the Texas Tuition Promise Fund, the state’s prepaid college tuition program, began Sept. 1 and runs through Feb. 28, 2022. The Texas Tuition Promise Fund offers parents and loved ones the chance to prepay a child’s future higher education at Texas public colleges and universities at today’s prices, excluding medical and dental institutions.

Court recognizes National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month and Kaufman County encourages all residents to be ready! The Commissioners’ Court passed a resolution today encouraging families to be ready for any and all disasters.

Grant funds available for prescribed burning to East Texas landowners

Texas A&M Forest Service is accepting grant applications to offset the cost of prescribed burning on private lands for Central and East Texas landowners through September 30, 2021. $477,786 in grant funds are available for eligible landowners conducting prescribed burns on their property by certified and insured prescribed burn managers.

USPS adds 49 Texas sites to new local delivery pilot

The U.S. Postal Service’s unprecedented pilot offering for neighborhood businesses has added 49 Southeast Texas sites. The USPS Connect Local pilot launched on July 19 at seven Dallas and Houston sites and is now available at 385 Texas postal facility locations. More pilot locations will be added in the coming months as operational capabilities are refined.
