Southwestern to celebrate Founder’s Day

For 85 consecutive years, Southwestern has celebrated its existence and the educator who founded the HBCU, but this year’s Lectureship is among the most anticipated and sweetest. In June 2022, Southwestern received full accreditation and reaffirmation from SACSCOC after a Florida oversight committee review.

DAR to host blood drive at Film Alley

More than 15-million pints of blood are transfused in this country each year. That exceeds 40-thousand pints daily. Hospitals in north, central and east Texas are using only a fraction of that amount, but Carter BloodCare still requests 1,000 volunteer blood donors each day to keep pace with local hospital demands.

Social Security announces 8.7 percent benefit increase

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for approximately 70 million Americans will increase 8.7 percent in 2023, the Social Security Administration announced Oct. 13. On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month starting in January.

Local boom continues as tax revenues increase

The Office of Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar delivered mostly positive news to Kaufman County city officials last week, announcing that 10 out of 13 local entities had shown sales tax revenue gains when comparing against the same calendar month for the previous year.
