Kaufman man sentenced to 25 years

District Attorney Erleigh Norville Wiley announced April 24 that a Kaufman County jury has sentenced Jason Clay Humphries, 47, to 25 years in the Texas penitentiary. After a week-long trial before Honorable Judge Casey Blair in the 86th District Court of Kaufman County, a jury found Humphries guilty of Sexual Assault of Child Enhanced.

Jacob Ward (Terrell High School) was recently named the Terrell ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year and Hanna Garcia (Bruce Wood Elementary) was named the Terrell ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year. District officials stated, “Congratulations to these amazing educators who will now go on to represent us at the Region X Teacher of the Year competition!”

TACO FESTIVAL

The City of Terrell and the Terrell Chamber of Commerce/CVB hosted the annual Terrell Taco Festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on May 6. The event was held on Nash and Adelaide Streets near Terrell City Hall and was a huge success. This family-oriented community festival included live performances from Mariachi Viva Mexico and Mexico 2000 Ballet Folklorico, a Children’s Entrepreneur Workshop, piñata busts and more. The fun-filled day was capped off with Terrell’s Best Taco Trophy being awarded by Mayor Rick Carmona to Tortilleria Terrell for the best taco.

Slight dip in sales tax revenues reported locally

DAVID KAPITAN editor@terrelltribune.com Kaufman County entered the month riding an impressive streak with the Texas State Comptroller’s Office reporting that 11 out of 13 local cities had reported sales tax revenue gains when comparing against totals from the same calendar month from the previous year for three consecutive months. That streak would come to an end in May with the comptroller’s office announcing that more than half of all Kaufman County cities, seven in total, had seen dips when comparing against May 2022 collections.
