As students navigate through their return to school, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reminds all Texans to exercise heightened caution and adhere to safety measures implemented to protect students, staff and fellow drivers this school year. This includes tips on how to safely drop off and pick up your child from school, drive cautiously through school zones and talk to your family and loved ones about staying safe this school year and beyond.

susan@vanzandtnews.com As the 2024 dove season approaches, Texas hunters are being reminded to keep an eye out for abandoned or deteriorated water wells while enjoying their outdoor excursions. These wells, often left unattended, pose significant safety hazards and can contribute to groundwater pollution, making it crucial for hunters to report any such findings to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).

This past week, I joined a couple of great friends for an afternoon/ evening of relaxing and filming whitetail deer and the following morning, enjoyed some great summertime blue catfish catching at Lake Tawakoni with my longtime friend, guide David Hanson. Let me tell you all about it.

On hand to celebrate and speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility at Terrell State Hospital were Terrell State Hospital Superintendent Dr. Mark Messer, Associate Commissioner of State Hospitals Kristy Carr, Deputy Executive Commissioner of Health and Special Care System Scott Schalchlin, Terrell Mayor Rick Carmona, State Senator District 2 Bob Hall and State Representative District 4 Keith Bell. Members of the Terrell City Council, City Staff, Terrell Chamber of Commerce, Terrell State Hospital Staff and many others attended the ceremony.

The groundUP is excited to announce the launch of its Annual Earning Our Stripes Promotion. This has occurred in Northern Illinois for the past three years, but this will mark the first time this community give-back program is being extended to the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Metroplex. This initiative is part of the ground-UP’s commitment to supporting charitable organizations, not-for-profits, and religious institutions by offering free pavement marking services.

Two members of the Terrell ISD FFA were honored at Terrell ISD’s school board meeting, Monday, Aug. 19. Gabriela Banales, a four-year exhibitor of Market Lambs and the Chapter President in her senior year, and Presley Briggs, a participant in Market Steers, Market Rabbits and Breeder Rabbits, with her rabbits earning a national ranking. Both students earned their Lone Star Degrees at the Texas FFA Convention this summer.
