Outdoor activities for the New Year

Body
At the close of each year, I always reflect upon all the great times I enjoyed in the outdoors and wonderful people I had the privilege of spending time with. Each year, one could almost ‘set his watch’ to the timing for a year in the outdoors. Beginning with late winter, white bass and striper fishing during the spawn, then spring turkey season and when the water warms around April, fishing for most species begins to heat up. Then in fall the hunting seasons once again kick in. Life in the outdoors for me has been a glorious merry-go-round of activities, each of which occur on a yearly basis at about the same time.
There is lots to do in the outdoors during the winter months. Using a caller to attract wild hogs is a great deal of fun and a good way to stock the freezer with great tasting wild pork for upcoming cookouts. Photo by Luke Clayton

Miles upon miles of West Texas hunting

Body
While sitting in a deer blind looking over a West Texas vista that seemed to stretch on forever, the tune, “Miles and Miles of Texas” came to mind. Songwriters Diane Johnston and Tommy Camfield surely must have spent time on this ranch in Mitchell County 60 years ago when they penned the words to their famous song.

The Terrell Tigers returned to the court following the Thanksgiving holiday this week, making the short trek to Mesquite to tangle with North Mesquite Stallions in a non-district showdown. Terrell would come up short in the contest, falling behind in the second quarter and never recovering in a 51-39 setback to the 6A Stallions.

Christmas Gifts For The Outdoors Person

Body
Those of us that hunt and fish and spend a great deal of time in the outdoors can be somewhat difficulty to shop for. Oh, a gift card from one of the big outdoors stores can always be put to good use but really cool gifts under the Christmas tree is what makes a fisherman or hunter smile! In this week’s column, I’ll list a few items that you might not know about but it’s a good bet the angler or hunter on your shopping list would be thrilled to have. Many of these items are not available at local stores and will have to be ordered but there is still plenty of time to do your shopping via the UPS truck!
