The Terrell Tigers moved one step closer to matching their win total for the entire 2020 season last week, scoring a dominant 40-13 win over the Wilmer-Hutchins Eagles. The Terrell ground game played a key role in the victory, churning out 386 yards and six touchdowns on 36 carries. The Terrell Tigers kept the scoreboard operator at Tommy Standridge Stadium in Carrollton busy last week, reaching the end zone time and time again to take home a season-opening 45-9 win over the Newman Smith Trojans Aug. 27.

The Terrell cross country team took to the road last week, traveling to Kaufman to compete at the Run with the Lions 4A and Under Meet. Terrell finished 10th overall in the varsity boys division out of 13 competing schools with 235 total points, behind Kaufman, Commerce, Eustace, Wills Point, Kilgore, Canton, Mabank, Grace Community and Sunnyvale, and ahead of Emory Rains, Caddo Mills and Farmersville.

The Terrell Tigers experienced expected growing pains on the gridiron in 2020, fielding a team heavy on underclassmen getting their first taste of Friday night football and the speed of the varsity game.

The Terrell Tigers will have their work cut out for them in 2021, competing in a district that contains three teams ranked in the top-7 of the state according to Texas High School football and two others that should be much improved once the season kicks off.

Youth was the name of the game for the Terrell volleyball program in 2020 as the team hit the court with just two seniors, seven juniors, two sophomores and two freshman throughout most of the season.

Participation in sports can be an important component of a student's overall school experience. So it should come as no surprise that the number of participants in high school sports increased for the 29th consecutive year in 2017-18, according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Participation in scholastic sports can be great for students, making a positive impact on their school careers both on the field and in the classroom. Sports can keep athletes physically fit, help develop confidence and assist students with making friends. However, as with all physical activities, safety must be made a priority by athletes, their parents and their coaches.

Schools are often at the heart of a community. Schools are centralized places where people gather and friendships are formed. Creating an environment where school spirit is strong can be crucial to building a thriving community.
