Another great Pancake Day

Folks flocked by the hundreds to the Terrell Kiwanis Club’s annual Pancake Day festivities at the Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ fellowship hall Tuesday. In a few speeches and scribblings of late, I have noted that we appear on the cusp of a new Roaring Twenties, similar to that emerging a century ago in the wake of the Spanish flu (hopefully without any expectation that I will master the Charleston). That modest projection inevitably raises the question: "If we roar like the 1920s, will we then fall through the floor like the Great Depression of the 1930s?" The answer is quite simple – No!!

Pace of vaccinations slows

Kaufman County is trailing the state in the percentage of residents who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 as the pace of vaccinations slows. As of Wednesday, May 12, 32.9% of the county’s eligible population was fully vaccinated, according to the Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

As of May 12, the FCC’s Emergency Broadband Benefit will make available to consumers substantial discounts on broadband service and computers. This pandemic-related program will continue until the $3.2 billion in federal funding runs out or six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the pandemic.

Mayor for the Day pushes museum agenda

Almost everyone has exclaimed: “If I were mayor, governor, president, etc., I’d do …” Well Bill Huthmacher, board president of the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum, got that chance on April 27 when he became Mayor for a Day of the City of Terrell. He purchased this honor during the Terrell Chamber of Commerce’s Civic Auction last year.

Mayor Rick Carmona proclaimed Tuesday, May 11 as City of Terrell Police Officer Recognition Day and called upon citizens to thank the city’s men and women in blue. Here he presents the proclamation to Terrell Police Chief Ken McKeown. The proclamation was made in association with National Police Week, in which the contributions and sacrifices of the police officers in service to their communities is recognized.
