More to hunting than the kill

For many years I have found myself in a tree stand or ground blind in early October with my bow. I’ve taken some good size bucks in northern states during early bow season but here closer to home it’s usually younger bucks and does that offer close-in bow shots.

Texas to receive $290 million from J&J in opioid settlement

AUSTIN – Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced a $290 million statewide opioid settlement agreement with Johnson & Johnson to resolve opioid-related claims. The agreement will largely track the terms of the Global Prescription Opioid Litigation Settlement Agreement that was announced July 23. According to the settlement, Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $29.84 million into the Qualified Settlement Fund, representing Texas’s allocation of the Global Abatement Settlement.

Constitutional referendum takes place Tuesday

Texas voters can soon weigh in on potential changes to the state’s Constitution regarding religious services, eligibility requirements for judges, county infrastructure and more. Election day is Tuesday, Nov.

A donation of flowers

Thanks to the work of students and a donation by the Terrell Garden Club, the Terrell Alternative Education Campus EAC campus became a little brighter recently with the addition of these colorful flowers. The students spent a few days cleaning out the flower boxes and planting the new plants. The students and staff say thanks to the Garden Club for the donation and community support. COURTESY PHOTO

Fitting tributes

Two people from Terrell whose names are etched deep into the city’s history were rightfully honored last week during the school district’s Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies. For vastly different reasons, Bernard Derrick and Leon Vineyard occupy a high rung in the annals of the Terrell Independent School District.

Leon Vineyard Field dedicated

Tribute was paid to the late Leon Vineyard on Oct. 15 during a field dedication ceremony at Memorial Stadium. Leon Vineyard Field is now the official name of the stadium’s gridiron. The ceremony was held in conjunction with the district’s annual Athletic Hall of Fame ceremonies. Vineyard led Terrell High School to state championships in 1952 and 1957. A premier college athlete who starred in football and basketball at North College Teachers College, Vineyard coached football in Terrell from 1948 to 1968. He continued teaching in Terrell until 1983. Vineyard died in 2004. His family and school officials are pictured here. COURTESY PHOTO

Hispanic Heritage Month

The Terrell ISD rolled out the red carpet to the local community last week, hosting a special event highlighting Hispanic art, heritage and culture at the Jamie Foxx Performing Arts Center Oct. 14.
