Blood donors are lifesavers for local patients who need transfusions. This includes children fighting cancer, mothers going through difficult childbirths, family members who require surgery, and grandparents with health issues, among many others in need.

Kaufman County fire departments have had their hands full during recent summers, crisscrossing the area to contain out of control grass fires sparked control burns. While the county is still well away from a potential burn ban, grass fire activity has picked up statewide in recent weeks as lingering heat and minimal rain showers have taken hold for the foreseeable future.

TEXAS PRESS ASSOCIATION A new Texas law recently signed by Gov. Greg Abbott requires school districts and charter schools to automatically enroll fifth graders who score in the top 40 percent on state math tests to be placed in advanced math classes, KUT reported.

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 8.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.12/g July 3, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 7.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 125.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 3.4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.80 per gallon.

RICHARD LEE Senate Media Services After the House and Senate failed to come to an agreement in the first called special session, Governor Greg Abbott called lawmakers back for an immediate session Wednesday to find a way to deliver billions in property tax cuts to Texans. Again, Abbott limited the agenda to bills that only use tax compression, where state revenue is used to buy down local school property tax rates, but added a second issue: legislation to put Texas on a pathway to eliminating school district maintenance and operations property taxes.
