In 1845, when North Texas was still a wild sweep of prairie, a small band of settlers from Indiana arrived with their wagons, their families, and their faith. Led by War of 1812 veteran Captain John Jacob Beck, they pitched their tents on a hill known then as Beck’s Mound and began worshipping together in his home. Within three years, they had built their first meeting house—shared by Methodists, Presbyterians, Baptists, and Christians alike.
