Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for approximately 70 million Americans will increase 8.7 percent in 2023, the Social Security Administration announced Oct. 13. On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month starting in January.

Church to host community outreach event

Genesis Center North Texas announces new leadership team

For over 20 years, the Genesis Center on State Highway 34 has been a beacon for women and children in crisis. This Christian-based facility serves women recovering from domestic abuse, facing homelessness, and/or recovering from addiction. Now in 2022, with new changes to the Board of Directors and new leadership, this ministry is bringing about changes to better serve Kaufman and surrounding counties.

OPEC decision impacts gas prices

Average gasoline prices in Texas have risen 19.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.24/g Oct. 10, according to GasBuddy's survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 12.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 34.0 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has increased 18.0 cents in the last week and stands at $5.04 per gallon.

POETRY COLOR RUN

More than 180 runners and walkers enjoyed the pleasant weather this weekend at the Annual Poetry Color Run Oct. 8. Overall winners 5K were Philip Morales and Debra Barbour. Other top finishers by age group were: Braxton Bouland and Kinzie Holland, 10 and under; Christian Glick and Naomi Neeb, 11-13 years of age; Karson Davis and Mikayla Buhr, 14-16 years of age; Jorge Vargas and Addy Jobe, 17-19 years of age; Audrey Reed, 20-29 years of age; Jeremy Benz and Lauren Gryder, 30-39 years of age; Fred Foreman and Colleen Jobe, 40-49 years of age; Matthew Glick and Jill Glick, 50-59 years of age; and Doug Reed, 60+. The 5k run and 1k walk were followed by a Family Fun Fest with games, food, vendors, bounce houses, and entertainment from local musician Kevin Curtis.
