Accident claims life of WPISD student

The Wills Point community found itself reeling this week after a major a two-vehicle accident resulted in the death of a high school student and injuries to three others. According to a preliminary report issued by the Wills Point Police Department, local first responders were dispatched in the early evening hours May 17 for a two-vehicle accident in the location of Highway 80 and FM-2965.

U.S. Marshals, FBI urge public to report phone scams

The U.S. Marshals and the FBI are alerting the public of several nationwide imposter scams involving individuals claiming to be U.S. marshals, court officers, or other law enforcement officials. They are urging people to report the calls their local FBI office and file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, which has the ability to detect patterns of fraud from the information collected and share that data with law enforcement.

Kaufman County recognized by Keep Texas Beautiful

Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB), a statewide grassroots environmental and community improvement non-profit organization, recently named Kaufman County a Silver Star Affiliate, a designation granted to only 28 of KTB’s nearly 300 affiliates. Silver Star recognition is the second-highest status any community affiliate can achieve.

Thirty members of a nonprofit organization, aptly named Airplanes and Coffee, flew into the Terrell Municipal Airport May 7 for coffee at the No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum. Founded by left to right, Russ Keith, Mike Roberts and John Naugle, the group hopes to increase awareness of general (non-commercial) aviation and to offer scholarships to people needing assistance with check rides and the airframe/power plant ratings testing fees - worthy goals toward increasing the number of private pilots and aircraft mechanics in the country. Gas prices hold steady

Average gasoline prices in Texas are unchanged in the last week, averaging $4.13/g May 16, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 44.1 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.37/g higher than a year ago. The price of diesel has risen 3.0 cents nationally in the past week and stands at $5.55 per gallon. According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $3.19/g yesterday while the most expensive was $5.70/g, a difference of $2.51/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $3.19/g while the highest was $5.70/g, a difference of $2.51/g. The national average price of gasoline is unchanged in the last week, averaging $4.46/g today. The national average is up 39.1 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands $1.43/g higher than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. This year’s Dr. Seuss event, designed to encourage local children and community members to read, had 175 participants and 142 children in attendance.
