I am the president of the Kaufman County Emergency Services District 3, which is an entity of the State of Texas. I am here today to address public safety issues, specifically fire, rescue and emergency medical services.

April 3-6: Preschool screenings will be held for children from birth to 5-years-old that reside within the boundaries of Terrell ISD who may be slow in developing or having difficulty speaking, hearing, seeing or that have a physical impairment. There is no cost.

As I write this column, all four of the number-1 seeds in the March Madness Tournament have been defeated. Wow! Who saw that coming! With Easter just around the corner, perhaps it’s a good time to ask who or what is number-1 in your life? Life is so short.

A few months ago, I introduced readers to a new addition in our household – a “pretend” breed called a “Teddy Bear”, a Shih Tzu/ Bijon mix. I called her “Fluffbucket” – my wife called her “Milly”. She was really just a tiny puppy body swaddled in lots of soft, white fur. She quickly took over my wife’s lap, and began chewing everything she could get her mouth around – socks, flip-flops, shoes, chair legs…and my plastic containers.

March 20: The Riter C. Hulsey Public Library and the Terrell Lions Club are hosting a free income tax preparation event for individuals and families making less than $70,000 each Monday from 6-7:30 p.m.

Texas is known far and wide as a low-tax state, boasting the fifth lowest taxes in America. This is one reason we are one of the most economically strong places to do business on Earth. Each year, companies and jobs flock to Texas, making us the top exporting state in America - exporting more products than the following three highest states combined.

If everything appears easy, surely it is, right? Just because something appears to be easy, does not mean it really is. Great coaches make things look easy because they know what they are doing. When others try to replicate a great coach, they often realize it wasn’t as it appeared. Many people in leadership positions do not understand the complexity of the game and make decisions without understanding what the results will be. Watching football on television makes coaching appear to be an easy thing to do. Heck, Some leaders are making changes and do not understand what they are doing. They allow their ears to be tickled and change programs for the sake of changing. Change is inevitable. Change is all around us. The world does not stop or even slow down because we want it to. The computer we buy today is already out of date. The same holds true for businesses. Either we change with the times or we are left behind, but we must know why and how to make changes.

Ever had the experience of wishing you were just…a little bit different you? Maybe a thousand or so various times in your life? Then in that respect, you are like a lot of people because that is a trait that most members of this two-legged species have in common; wishing we were just a little different than we are.

The 88th Texas Legislature convened on January 10, 2023 and will adjourn on May 29. The legislature meets every odd-numbered year for 140 days, followed by a 19-month interim (barring any special session called by the governor at his discretion).
